Job Description:

L3Harris Space and Airborne Systems has an opening for a Lead Optical Engineer.

This individual will be viewed as a Subject matter expert with comprehensive knowledge of job area and in-depth knowledge of project management.  Manages large, complex project initiatives of substantial importance to the organization with minimal oversight or direction.  Communicates within and outside of the organization to explain and influence changes to practices, processes and approaches.  Makes significant improvements in processes, systems, or products.  Provides input into new products/processes and implements operational plans that have measurable impact on business or functional results.

This position will be a direct interface with customer and stakeholder leadership. The role includes responsibility for guiding Harris employees in their work and influencing them to deliver their best. This person will be responsible to plan and manage technical project/program initiatives and capture activities on a developing engineering program for a critical major component, or large custom system. Requires planning, developing and coordinating of new project plans with little precedence. Directs all levels of project staff across several business functions and coordinates project requirements. Has knowledge of new technologies requiring coordination of applications across project requirements. Has the ability to develop solutions to complex problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.

Oversees the project execution to ensure customer requirements are met, while maintaining/updating scope, schedule and costs. Gathers and interprets customer requirements and collaborates across the extended enterprise to identify and acquire relevant assets/resources. Identifies risks and creates opportunities to manage the operational or market risks for a project or program. Identifies opportunities to expand sales to existing customers or sell programs to new customers. 

The position is focused on programs for optical components and systems, and therefore desires some level of understanding of optical component design, manufacturing and testing, and component assembly.

Essential Functions:

  • Create technical briefing products that are tailored to technical or non-technical audiences
  • Ability to travel as required: <20%


  • Bachelor’s Degree with 9+ years of experience or equivalent or Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills to include writing and briefing (to all levels, both company and customer) Comprehensive level knowledge of job area typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience
  • PMP Certification
  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics
  • Proposal management and execution experience
  • Familiarity with PM methods, including Earned Value Management
  • Familiarity with optical component design, manufacturing and testing
